Rwand AlSalim
Sometimes, the most important part of a journey is not knowing exactly where it will lead… but being willing to take the next step anyway.
Meet Rwand AlSalim, a senior Management student at the American University of Sharjah, minoring in Integrated Marketing Communications.
A Palestinian-American, Rwand’s experiences growing up around different cultures and communities shaped her curiosity around people, communication, and what brings them together.
For Rwand, that curiosity became a way of navigating university.
Rather than staying within one path, she kept getting involved, taking on new responsibilities, and putting herself in situations where she had to learn as she went.
She served as Vice President of the Women’s Empowerment Club, spent a year with the Palestinian Cultural Club, and now serves as Vice President of the American Cultural Club. She also works as a teaching assistant in AUS’s Department of Management, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship.
But for Rwand, the titles are not the most meaningful part.
It is what happened between them.
Working with different personalities taught her to listen. Unexpected challenges taught her to take responsibility. New environments taught her to speak up, adapt, and become comfortable with not having every answer.
- Interned with OISSG Consultancy in Doha, contributing to work involving Qatar News Agency and the Ministry of Justice
- Saw ideas she had spent years studying in the classroom come to life in a professional setting, for one of the first times
- Came away with a clearer sense of the work she wants to pursue, and a transition from student to professional that finally felt tangible
- Interests now sit at the intersection of management, branding, communication, and strategy
- Biggest takeaway isn't a position or an achievement, it's a mindset: meaningful opportunities rarely arrive when you feel completely prepared for them
Now in her senior year, Rwand is looking ahead without feeling the need to have every detail figured out.
She hopes to pursue a master’s degree and build a career that allows her to remain curious, creative, work with people, and continue learning.
Her advice reflects the lesson her own journey has taught her:
“Sometimes you just have to say yes, show up, and trust yourself enough to figure out the rest along the way.”
Because readiness does not always come before the opportunity.
Sometimes, the opportunity is what helps you become ready.
